  4.     About 55,000 Vietnamese boat people languish in Hong Kong
  5. detention camps, and as hopes dwindle that they will ever be
  6. classified as legitimate refugees, more and more are
  7. "volunteering" to go home. But frustration and bitterness have
  8. been building for months.
  9.  
  10.     Last week, just before the arrival of Tet, the Vietnamese
  11. celebration of the lunar New Year, the worst violence yet
  12. erupted among 800 likely returnees waiting for the flights home
  13. in a camp known as Shek Kong.
  14.  
  15.     Fighting started in a section of the camp between
  16. Vietnamese northerners and those from the south, who are
  17. normally held separately in the camps because of their
  18. longstanding political and cultural antagonisms. As police began
  19. arriving in force, 2,000 southern Vietnamese in an adjacent
  20. section tore down a 17-ft. wire-mesh fence and joined the fray.
  21. Panicked northerners sought refuge in a corrugated-steel
  22. dormitory. Their attackers began burning blankets and stuffing
  23. them through windows, setting fire to the building. The eventual
  24. toll: 23 burned alive or suffocated, including 10 children, and
  25. 125 injured, some of them seriously enough to be hospitalized.
